Wind-beaten sails and the welcoming embrace of blue hillsides take the listener to a magical journey on the wings of music. Finnish-Swedish ballads, impassioned tangos, magical minuets and original compositions. Maria Kalaniemi and Eero Grundström’s duo-record, Svalan, was released on April 2017. The much celebrated album remained in the top ten of the prestigious World Music Charts Europe for five months, rising to number one in July.
“Svalan is an intimate, meditative treatment of the fundamental things. As well, the record has singing birds, the chatterings of raven and the howling of a wolfdog. Delightful – as is the music. Sometimes it feels like the duo is making the music fly. For an example, Liljan-tango; the harmonium-runs amongst the familiar tango are so ornate that it brings to mind Bach and the hymnals. An excellent adaptation, breathing and flying.”
